Bound typescript diary with 215 uncaptioned snapshots pasted-in. The journal records Montagu's impressions of his Indian tour of 1912-13, undertaken whilst serving as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for India (1910-14). This volume covers the period 18 October to 29 November 1912, during which Montagu visited (among other places) Bombay, Baroda, Alwar, Simla, Peshawar, Khyber Pass, Kashmir, Srinagar, Draphana, Khewra, Rasul, Lyallpur, Amritsar, Kheri.
The photographs, of average snapshot quality, were presumably taken by Montagu, and subjects include: railway station at Kishengarh, street scenes and buildings at Alwar, a military review at Alwar, views of Simla, Peshawar and the Khyber Pass, the Indus railway bridge at Kohat, camel caravans at Jamrud, topographical views of Kashmir and scenes at Srinagar (including views at the Tyndale-Biscoe Mission School), salt being stacked at Khewra Station, architectural views and street scenes at Lahore and Amritsar, shikar scenes at Kheri. |
