Description: The Lewin Bentham Bowring Albums were purchased by the India Office Library in 1959. The Albums were compiled, mainly after his retirement from India in 1870, by Lewin Bentham Bowring (1824-1910), who was Deputy Commissioner in the Punjab from 1849-54, Private Secretary to the Viceroy and Governor-General Lord Canning from 1858-62, and Chief Commissioner of Mysore and Coorg from 1862-70.

The collection as originally purchased was in the form of three large albums containing photographs, painted portraits, maps, genealogical trees, letters and seals. These, however, were in considerable disorder and poor condition when acquired and the collection was therefore pulled down, repaired and rebound in a series of large (475x610mm) post-bound albums covered in red cloth

The albums contain material relating to the rulers and ruling houses of India and neighbouring states and countries. Most, if not all, the Indian Princely States are represented in the albums, and to each is devoted a page or section consisting, in most cases, of a map and history of the state, a genealogical table or 'pedigree' of the ruling house, portraits and photographs of rulers, letters or documents written, signed or issued by them, and their seals, banners and devices (including a number of kharita bags in which the letters were received). The documents are in many different languages and scripts and date mostly from the nineteenth century. Among the earlier original documents are two early 16th-century copper tablets (shashanas) of Krishna Raya and Acuta Raya of Vijayanagar, and grants and orders of Akbar and other Mughal emperors, of the Maratha Peshwas and of Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan of Mysore.

Bowring also collected material relating to the British in India. There are letters and portraits of each of the Governors-General of India from Clive to the Earl of Minto (1845-1914), of the Secretaries of State for India from Lord Stanley to Lord Morley, and of many of the Commanders-in-Chief, Governors of Bombay and Madras, Lieutenant-Governors, Chief Commissioners and Residents. Portraits of officials living before the age of photography are generally in the form of photographic copies of portraits in the National Portrait Gallery.

Bowring also included in the albums letters, and occasionally photographs, of many of India's leading personalities in politics, literature and religion. These are to be found in Mss Eur G.38/3.

ALBUM 1 (Mss Eur G.38/1). The first one hundred sections are arranged in order of precedence according to the number of salutes received by the Princes at the 1877 Delhi Durbar. Sections 1-70A are to be found in album 1 and sections 71-100 in album 2.
Now rebound into post-bound volumes as follows: 1-2; I-XIII; 3-6; 7-13; 14-20; 21-26; 27-31; 32-35; 36-39; 40-44; 45-50; 51-55; 56-60; 61-66; 67-70.

ALBUM 2 (Mss Eur G.38/2). This album contains sections 71-100 in continuation from Album 1; following this are sections 101-110, containing material relating to princes receiving personal salutes; there then follow sections foliated in Roman rather than Arabic numerals: sections II to XLIV cover extinct dynasties, sections XLV to XLIX cover Siam, Burma and Persia, and sections LI to LXVIII cover Governors-General, Secretaries of State and Commanders-in-Chief of India.
Now rebound into post-bound volumes as follows: 71-75; 76-81; 82-89; 90-100; 101-108; 109-110; XIII-XXXI; XXXII-XLIX; L-LXIX.

ALBUM 3 (Mss Eur G.38/3). Sections 1-186 in Album 3 contain material to chiefs not receiving salutes from the Government of India. The sections are arranged in no particular order, although Bowring's index (Mss Eur G.38/4) brings the material together under provinces. Sections 187-191 contain material relating to British officials, and section 192 covers Tibet.
Now rebound into eight postbound volumes as follows: Sections 1-22; 22-51; 52-75; 76-103; 104-132; 133-155; 156-182; 183-192.

This catalogue lists only photographic portraits. For painted portraits, see the Prints & Drawings catalogue. No adequate list exists for the important series of letters and seals in the collection.
