Prints mounted of brown card, folded to form a loose album measuring 370x295mm. Most prints have handwritten captions on or below the photographs. Some captions are contemporary, others evidently added later. Amended captions have been composed for the catalogue entries. The album was compiled by George Albert Herniman (1881-1965), Bandmaster of the 2nd Battalion, Devonshire Regiment and records army service at Quetta c.1919-23, Kailana c.1924-5, Delhi c.1924-6 and England c.1928-9. The album contains a mixture of professional work and amateur snapshots in varying conditions. Most of the amateur snapshots are informal portraits of family and colleagues, of no great quality. Included in the collection is a copy of Herniman's birth certificate, and xeroxes of a newspaper article about his life. |
