Photographs Album details for shelfmark Photo 24/

Record of the Indian Army in Europe during the First World War.

Photographers: H.D. Girdwood
Contents: 631 prints 80x95mm to 165x215mm Gelatin silver prints
Provenance: Presented by J.W. Hose. 1 June 1922.
Notes: See papers and lists kept with collection. See also Photo 21, which contains many of the same prints as this collection.
Subjects: First World War - Indian army - British army - military hospitals
Description: A collection of 631 loose prints divided into two categories. Prints 1-356 are a selected series of enlargements from Girdwood's photographs (containing a good number of duplicates); the remainder, prints 357-631, are contact prints forming a more complete set of the series. The majority of prints in this latter series are included in the former and the contact prints (which are in addition in curled and generally poor condition) have not been individually catalogued. Captions for catalogued prints are taken from the typewritten labels or handwritten captions on the reverse. These captions are the ones given by the censor for public release during the war and therefore omit specific details as to location, precise date and military units concerned. However, the captions generally also cite Girdwood's original number, and many of these missing details can be obtained by referring to the fuller list, a copy of which is also included with the collection.
